ALDOT halts temporary lane closures on interstates for Memorial Day holiday

May 19, 2026

Road construction will not hinder travelers during the Memorial Day holiday.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will have no temporary lane closures on interstate routes from Friday, May 22, 2026 at noon until Monday, May 25, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.

Alabama roadways will experience higher traffic volumes during the holiday, and the suspension is to help reduce traffic congestion and improve safety with more people traveling during the holiday.

“Safety is our top priority, and we want to keep traffic moving and allow everyone to get to their destinations,” said Dalton Middleton, Drive Safe Alabama Coordinator. “In 2024, nine people died in crashes during the Memorial Day holiday in the state of Alabama. By suspending lane closures, we hope to make everyone’s journey safer.”

ALDOT Holiday Travel Tips:

Avoid Distractions: Drivers should keep their eyes and minds on the road and avoid cell phone use while driving.

Observe Speed Limits: Speeding is the number one contributor to fatal crashes in Alabama. It reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.

Buckle Up: Seat belts save lives and reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash. Ensure that everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt properly.

ALDOT encourages all drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay alert on the roads if traveling for Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer travel season.
