The bridge on SR-243 over Cedar Creek in Franklin County is open to traffic.

After being closed for a year for a bridge replacement, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced the bridge reopened on Wednesday, July 8.

Contractor Miller and Miller constructed the $2.8 million project. The declining condition of the bridge constructed in 1965 led ALDOT to demolish and replace the bridge with a wider and safer bridge built to modern standards.

The new SR-243 bridge over Cedar Creek is seven feet wider than the previous bridge.

Unlike the old four-span bridge, the new SR-243 bridge is a single-span bridge with no piers between abutments.

Though just four feet longer than the old bridge, the new bridge is about seven feet wider, improving the roadway across the bridge by adding shoulder space. The finished grade elevation of the new bridge is about 4.5 feet higher than that of the old bridge.

ALDOT urges drivers to adhere to the reduced speed limit and be mindful of people and equipment in the work zone since it is still active. Lane closures are still possible for minor work items.
