The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is providing public notice that portions of the Cochrane Causeway (US-90 ALT) will temporarily close to allow BWC Mobile Terminal’s contractor Oil Recovery Inc. to replace the northernmost industrial pipe bridge spanning the roadway.

The closure will take place on:
- Beginning: 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7
- Reopening: 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8
- Duration: 12 hours
During the closure, crews will close the entire roadway to all traffic at the pipe bridge work area to provide access for workers and equipment to remove and replace the pipe bridge.
The closure will extend from the perimeter closure points at Bankhead Tunnel on the east side to US-43 on the west side. Local traffic may travel beyond the perimeter closure points to access nearby residences and businesses. However, motorists cannot pass through the pipe bridge work area during construction. Only emergency vehicles will be permitted through the work area.
Commercial truck drivers and hazardous materials (hazmat) transport operators should plan ahead and follow planned detours (see map).
- Standard commercial loads should utilize I-10 as alternate
- Hazardous transports and other permitted loads will utilize I-10, SR-59, and I-65 as alternate with a signed detour:
- Eastbound I-10 HM and Permit loads shall take I-65 to SR-59 back to I-10
- Westbound I-10 HM and Permit loads shall use Exit 44 (SR 59) N to I-65 and then south to get back to I-10.
- The Africatown Bridge and US 90 causeway will not be available to hazmat transports during the 12-hour closure.
Detour Routes

Motorists and commercial drivers should allow extra travel time and plan their routes accordingly.
ALDOT appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation while this work is completed.
