The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has opened the new Shephard Branch bridge on SR-119.

In August of 2025, work began to replace the 91-year-old bridge. The bridge has now more than doubled in size from 65 feet to 140 feet, creating a safer, more comfortable commute for motorists.

Some of the first vehicles traveling over the new SR-119 bridge over the Shephard Branch.

Starting Tuesday, June 30, traffic shifted from the old bridge onto the first phase of the new structure over SR-119.

The widened design of the highway hosts more than 7,000 vehicles daily.

Final grading and demolition of the old bridge should be complete by the end of the summer.

ALDOT would like to thank the public for their patience as we continue to work to improve SR-119 for the future.
