As Americans celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is preparing for one of the busiest travel periods of the summer. Heavy traffic is expected across Alabama from Thursday, July 2, through Tuesday, July 7.
The highest volumes are anticipated along Interstate 10, the I-10 Bayway, the US 90/98 Causeway, and beach-bound routes leading to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
To help keep traffic moving safely, ALDOT has suspended temporary lane closures on interstates and state routes during the holiday weekend.
Additional traffic monitoring, incident management teams, and law enforcement officers will be positioned along major travel corridors to respond quickly to crashes and minimize delays.
Motorists traveling to Alabama’s beaches will also benefit from the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge traffic pattern. The new bridge now carries southbound traffic toward Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.
Meanwhile, the former toll bridge carries northbound traffic leaving the island. Together, the two bridges provide four dedicated travel lanes, increasing capacity and improving traffic flow during peak travel periods.

ALDOT encourages travelers to plan and avoid the busiest travel times whenever possible. Hitting the road between 5 and 7 a.m. can help drivers stay ahead of the crowds. If an early start isn’t an option, consider traveling later in the evening after traffic begins to ease.
Before leaving home, check real-time traffic conditions using the ALGO Traffic app or website for live cameras, travel times, incidents, and alternate routes, ALGO Traffic.
ALDOT wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Independence Day weekend.
Remember: Buckle up, slow down, put the phone away, and give yourself extra travel time. Safe travels—and happy 250th birthday, America!
