The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has accepted bids for pedestrian and traffic safety improvements along Jacksonville State University’s campus.
On Friday, July 31, ALDOT received bids to upgrade one mile of SR-204 near the heart of JSU.
The construction from Nisbet Lake Road to SR-21 includes a handful of enhancements:
- Widened three-lane roadway
- Additional and upgraded sidewalks
- New traffic signal at Nisbet Lake Road
- Pedestrian signal at Chief Ladiga Trail crossing
The project is the result of a coordinated partnership between ALDOT, Jacksonville State University and the City of Jacksonville.
“Safety is our top priority. These strategic improvements to Alabama Highway 204 will make a positive impact for the thousands of students, employees, community members, and visitors who travel this corridor every day,” JSU Police Chief Michael Barton said.
These necessary modifications follow last year’s nearby improvements on SR-21.
Those included new sidewalks, grassed pedestrian barrier islands, resurfacing, striping ADA curb ramps, and detectable warning surfaces.
“I believe the project on 204 will significantly help improve traffic flow in the 204 corridor,” Jacksonville Police Chief Marcus Wood said. “These improvements will also make drivers safer from a design standpoint. We look forward to the development and support its implementation.”
Once the project is officially awarded over the coming weeks, ALDOT expects construction on the SR-204 job to begin this fall.
The contractor has until October 31, 2027, to complete the work.
