CR-87 bridge southbound lane over I-65 remains closed for repairs

Following Tuesday morning’s bridge strike on CR-87 over I-65, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will keep the southbound lane of the CR-87 bridge closed.  Emergency repairs are necessary on the western half of the span over the coming weeks.

While I-65 south travelers will be able to access the Shelby County Airport as normal once that direction of the interstate reopens to traffic Tuesday evening, northbound motorists will need to find a new route to the transportation hub.

As a temporary detour, ALDOT is recommending that I-65 northbound drivers take Exit 231 in Calera.  From there, they should turn north on US-31, west on CR-22 before turning north on Smokey Road to the airport (see attached detour map).

This detour will be necessary for the next few weeks until the CR-87 bridge repairs are complete.

Please observe work zone and detour speed limits, work zone signs, and use caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this project to improve Alabama’s roadways.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama.
