ALDOT has awarded $12,099,563 in state grants through the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program. The projects receiving funding total $73,071,980, including $53,635,243 in federal funding and $7,337,174 in airport contributions. These funds will support improvement projects at public-use airports across the state. The Alabama Department of Transportation’s funding combines state investment with airport contributions and federal funds to help airport owners address infrastructure needs.
“Alabama’s airports support local businesses, emergency response and travel in communities across the state,” said Frank Farmer, chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau. “This funding will help airport owners address important infrastructure needs and maintain safe, reliable facilities.”
Projects receiving support include runway and taxiway work, apron improvements, pavement maintenance, airfield lighting and drainage, hangar construction, land acquisition, equipment purchases and other facility needs. The specific work varies by airport, based on each project’s scope and funding plan.
These Alabama airport grants are part of the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program. The program provides financial assistance and technical support to public-use airports for planning, construction and maintenance. ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau works with airport owners as projects move forward.
Airports serve more than travelers. They help connect communities to businesses and services, support emergency response and contribute to local economic activity. Maintaining runways, taxiways, lighting and other facilities helps airports continue serving pilots and the communities that rely on them.
