ALDOT to perform I-65 evacuation exercise April 22

Apr 21

On Tuesday, April 22, representatives from the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and local agencies will conduct a hurricane preparation lane-reversal simulation on I-65 from Mobile to Montgomery.

There should be no traffic impacts, but motorists may see activity from these agencies along the I-65 corridor. When personnel are present along the road, drivers should use caution and keep a safe distance.

Hurricane season begins June 1 and will end Nov. 30.  The annual contraflow exercise provides agencies a dress rehearsal opportunity in advance of hurricane season to help ensure an event will be executed safely.

Interstate lane reversal, or “contraflow,” requires extensive communication from all agencies involved. In the event of an evacuation situation, ALDOT would convert all lanes on I-65 to the northbound direction from Mobile to Montgomery. Contraflow is designed to accommodate the significant increase in northbound traffic as hurricane evacuees travel out of the path of the hurricane.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally and economically sound transportation network across Alabama. For additional information, visit www.dot.state.al.us.
