Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) employees across Alabama donned bright splashes of orange today in support of #GoOrangeDay. This annual event marks a key day within National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW). NWZAW, a nationwide campaign, reminds drivers about the critical importance of safety in roadway work zones.
“Our employees are out on Alabama’s roadways every single day, often just feet away from moving traffic,” said Drive Safe Alabama Coordinator Allison Green. “#GoOrangeDay is an important opportunity to amplify the message that work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility. We want all drivers to slow down, pay attention, and help ensure that our team members, and all road users, make it home safely each and every day.”
National Work Zone Awareness Week is a collaborative effort between transportation agencies, safety organizations, and industry partners across the country. The goal is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities in work zones by educating drivers on safe driving practices in these often-hazardous environments.
ALDOT reminds motorists to:
- Slow down: Obey posted speed limits and be prepared to reduce speed further in work zones.
- Eliminate distractions: Put away cell phones and avoid other distractions while driving.
- Pay attention: Focus on the road ahead and be aware of workers and equipment.
- Be patient: Expect delays and plan accordingly.
- Move over: When possible and safe to do so, move over a lane for emergency vehicles and work crews.

The dedication of ALDOT employees in maintaining and improving Alabama’s roadways is vital to the state’s economy and quality of life. By participating in #GoOrangeDay, they not only raise awareness but also demonstrate their commitment to a safe working environment for themselves and safer roads for all Alabamians.
Let’s all do our part to keep Alabama’s work zones safe. Remember, orange means slow down and pay attention. Your actions can save a life.
