As summer winds down and students from kindergarten to college return to campuses, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) reminds drivers to drive safely as school begins.
Motorists should stay alert, drive responsibly and slow down. With that in mind, drivers should expect heavier traffic and more pedestrian activity statewide.
As a result, drivers should expect more traffic around school zones and college campuses. Traffic will change as more buses are on the road and universities welcome students back.
Therefore, motorists in school zones and on campuses should obey reduced speed limits and be aware of increased foot traffic.
Earlier, Governor Kay Ivey shared a message of encouragement with Alabama’s students, a strong reminder for all Alabamians to support them. Specifically, Governor Ivey offered a challenge for students as they begin the new school year:
“Be bold enough to raise your hand. Be kind enough to uplift someone. And be brave enough to fail, then try again,” said Governor Ivey. “Because one day someone just might look back and say, that student changed Alabama. And I wouldn’t be surprised if that student is you. Now let’s get to work and let’s make this school year the strongest one yet.”
Her words serve as a reminder for drivers to do their part to protect the future of Alabama by watching out for students and ensuring their journey to school is a safe one.
With that in mind, no matter where you’re driving, in a neighborhood, near a school or through a college town, stay alert and give yourself extra time.
From kindergartners to college students, Alabama’s young people are heading back to school and every one of them deserves to arrive safely.
