An Alabama Department of Transportation project to modify the intersection of US-431 and SR-26 in Seale, begins Monday, Aug. 18, weather permitting.

The project will modify the intersection of US-431 and SR-26 into a restricted crossing U-turn intersection (RCUT).

This intersection eliminates left turns from SR-26 onto US-431 by installing concrete islands to channel traffic.  Instead, motorists intending to make a left onto US-431 from SR-26 will first make a right onto US-431 and utilize the new crossovers to make a U-turn.

The intersection also eliminates through traffic on SR-26 but will still permit left turns onto SR-26 from US-431.

The project will also widen the right turn lanes on US-431 onto SR-26.

RCUT intersections eliminate multiple conflict points which results in a significant reduction in serious injury and fatal crashes.

ALDOT’s “Zero to 60” series offers viewers an in-depth look at the benefits of RCUT intersections and why they’re becoming an increasingly common sight across the state.

Lane closures and a reduced speed limit are possible throughout the construction of the project.

Motorists should plan accordingly for delays and be mindful of equipment and people in the work zone.

The $1.4 million project was awarded to East Alabama Paving Company, Inc., out of Opelika, Ala., who had the lowest bid that met the project requirements.  The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
