About 17 miles of I-59 in northern Etowah County and southern DeKalb County will close Friday, Dec. 19, for repairs.
A significant segment of the southbound roadway between Reece City and Collinsville is being reconstructed by contractor Vulcan Materials. During the project, both directions of traffic have been sharing the northbound roadway.
For the contractor to make needed repairs to the northbound roadway, ALDOT must close I-59 between Exit 188 at Reece City and Exit 205 at Collinsville from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. ALDOT will divert all traffic to US-11 during that timeframe.
Additionally, ALDOT will make repairs to the end of the northbound bridge over Stevens Gap Road during the closure.
Official detour route
- Northbound traffic will detour at Exit 188 to SR-211 northbound to US-11 northbound to SR-68 westbound, then back to I-59 at Exit 205.
- Southbound traffic will detour at Exit 205 to SR-68 eastbound to US-11 southbound to SR-211 southbound, then back to I-59 at Exit 188.
Please expect delays and plan additional travel time. Visit ALGOtraffic.com or download the ALGO Traffic app for real-time traffic and road condition information.
I-59 reconstruction
The $40.7 million project to reconstruct more than 10 miles of the southbound roadway began this spring. ALDOT anticipates completion in spring 2027.
On Dec. 5, ALDOT opened bids for another project to replace and rehabilitate part of I-59 in DeKalb County. That project is expected to push the total of contracts for the reconstruction of I-59 in Etowah and DeKalb counties to nearly $240 million.
