The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) held a joint press conference at Thompson Engineering in Mobile today, April 15, to officially kick off the 2024 National Work Zone Awareness Week campaign.

Representatives from ALDOT, AGC, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and the Alabama Road Builders Association (ARBA) gathered to emphasize the importance of driving safely through work zones and to announce Alabama’s 2023 work zone fatality and injury numbers.

“Work zones are essential to be able to maintain and upgrade our roadways. However, work zones can be dangerous because hazards can appear unexpectedly, endangering roadway workers and motorists,” said ALDOT Southwest Region Assistant Region Engineer Brian Aaron.

Members of the local media interviewed representatives and later reported on the importance of work zone safety.

“These workers are husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, sons, daughters, friends, and co-workers…who like everyone else, simply want to go home to their families at the end of the day when their shift is over. We are tired of losing our family members due to the carelessness of distracted drivers,” said Skip Powe, Executive Director of the Alabama Road Builders Association.
