The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) recently released its 2023 annual report. This report outlines the department’s accomplishments and operations over fiscal year 2023, which ran from Oct. 1, 2022 through Sept. 30, 2023.
Looking back on successes
March 12, 2023, marked the fourth anniversary of the passage of the Rebuild Alabama Act. Rebuild Alabama has accounted for record new investments across Alabama.
Rebuild Alabama has generated hundreds of millions of dollars directed toward local projects in all 67 counties., Significant projects on state, U.S. and interstate highways have also been completed with Rebuild Alabama funds.
The Rebuild Alabama Act is making it possible for ALDOT to address congestion relief and to open rural counties through an economic development roads initiative. Local officials are checking off needed projects that simply would not be possible without revenues provided by Rebuild Alabama.
Charting the course for the future
In 2023, ALDOT awarded 201 contracts for road and bridge projects totaling nearly $800 million. This spending marked significant investments in resurfacing and maintenance, bridge replacements, congestion relief, economic development roads and local projects.
Planning took center stage in January 2023 as ALDOT kicked off the process for updating the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). ALDOT, in conjunction with Metropolitan Planning Organizations, develops the STIP, a federally mandated long-range plan encompassing projects for 2024 through 2027.
Creating the STIP involved more than 50 public involvement meetings held around Alabama. Input from citizens, local planning organizations and elected officials about their priorities for the next four years was included in the STIP.
The ALDOT Annual Report is a valuable resource for Alabama residents interested in the state’s transportation infrastructure. It provides a transparent look at the department’s work.
