The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), in partnership with the City of Mobile and Mobile County, is rolling out the first wave of a significant upgrade to the traffic signal infrastructure in the Mobile area as part of the Regional Traffic Operations Program (RTOP).
The initiative aims to enhance traffic flow and safety through the deployment of new controllers and hardware across 174 traffic signals.
What Motorists Can Expect:
- Temporary Signal Disruptions: Starting Monday, August 26, 2024, motorists may experience brief signal disruptions as the new systems come online. During this period, traffic signals may flash for 1-2 minutes as the upgrades come online and crews adjust signal timing.
- Caution Advised: Motorists are urged to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws, especially when encountering flashing or non-operational signals. When in doubt, treat flashing red lights as stop signs and proceed with care.
- Driver Impact: Significant changes in traffic signal timing and patterns are expected. Motorists should remain patient and drive attentively as they adjust to the new system.
- Reporting Issues: ALDOT encourages motorists to report any concerns or issues they encounter during the transition by calling 311.
