ALDOT encourages all to join volunteers for the 37th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup

Volunteers helping with the Ala. Coastal Clean Up.
Sep 06

Alabama’s Coastal Cleanup is back for its 37th year. Alabama PALS (People Against a Littered State) and The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), are calling on all community members and groups to join in making a difference!

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, thousands of volunteers will gather along Alabama’s beaches, lakes, and streams to remove trash and debris from our precious coastal areas. This event is the largest one-day volunteer effort in the state, dedicated to preserving clean oceans and waterways.

Make a Difference: Be Part of the Solution

Last year, 2,370 dedicated volunteers helped remove an impressive 22,009 pounds of debris from Alabama’s coastal areas. This year, we’re aiming even higher and need your help to make it happen! Whether you’re an individual, a family, or part of a community group, your participation is crucial in keeping our waters clean and our environment healthy.

Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, September 21, 2024
  • Time: Morning start times vary by location, but most cleanups begin between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
  • Visit AlabamaCoastalCleanup.com to find your local cleanup site and register as a volunteer.

Pollution Prevention: A Key Focus

While Alabama’s Coastal Cleanup is about cleaning up, it’s also about preventing future pollution. The event emphasizes education and empowerment, encouraging participants to become part of the solution to marine debris. A unique aspect of the cleanup is the data collection effort. Volunteers are encouraged to use the Ocean Conservancy’s Clean Swell App® to record specific types of marine debris they collect. This data is compiled, analyzed, and tracked year after year, helping to better understand the behaviors that contribute to marine debris. The information gathered is essential in educating the public, businesses, industries, and government officials, leading to long-lasting solutions.

ALDOT supports the Alabama State Lands Division and Alabama PALS and is proud to sponsor of event, and we are committed to supporting efforts that protect and preserve Alabama’s natural beauty. Let’s work together to “Get the Trash Out of the Splash” and make the 37th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup the most successful one yet!
