A sidewalk improvement project on US-11/Gault Avenue in Fort Payne will start Monday, weather permitting.

The Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) project will install Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps from First Street to Third Street North. The project also includes drainage work and curb and gutter replacement.

Through the end of the year, motorists should expect intermittent closures of the northbound lane during daytime as well as occasional overnight lane closures. During lane closures, northbound through traffic will be detoured to First Street to Godfrey Avenue then to Fifth Street NE.

Project funding includes a $638,400 federal TAP grant and $159,600 from the City of Fort Payne, the local sponsor. Cities, towns, county commissions and metropolitan planning organizations can apply for grants through the TAP program. The program helps fund infrastructure-related projects to provide safe routes for non-drivers, including children, senior adults, and individuals with
disabilities.
