The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is implementing an access management project along Cobbs Ford Road, between Bass Pro Boulevard and the southbound entrance ramp to Interstate 65.
The contractor started the project on Monday, Nov. 18.
The project, presented to the public in Sept. 2023, limits some turning movements by installing concrete islands in the median. A U-Turn bulb will be constructed on Cobbs Ford Road, east of Legends Parkway.
Limiting left turn movements reduces the number of conflict points which often lead to serious injuries and fatalities, and increases safety.
Motorists can expect lane closures and reduced speed limits during construction. No lane closurers are permitted from 6 to 8:30 a.m. or 3 to 6 p.m. ALDOT urges drivers to plan accordingly and be alert to workers and equipment in the construction zone.
Mcelhenney Construction Co., LLC; based in Mobile, secured the approximately $500,000 contract by submitting the lowest bid meeting project requirements. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2025.
