Each year, employees from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) cut down, haul, install and help decorate the official state Christmas tree that sits at the top of the Capitol steps facing Dexter Avenue in Montgomery.

This year’s tree is an Eastern Red Cedar standing at 37 feet tall.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Allen of Fitzpatrick, Alabama, grew the cedar in Bullock County and donated it.

ALDOT employees place approximately 35,000 LED lights on the tree, along with a star topper and various ornaments that represent the counties in Alabama. This is a team effort that uses several people and various types of equipment to make it happen.

The Governor invites the public to the annual tree lighting ceremony held Friday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony will include music, recitations and a countdown to the lighting of the tree.
