Green T intersections enhance safety

A Continuous Green T (CGT) intersection is a specialized traffic intersection design for three-way (T-shaped) intersections.

These intersections enhance safety and efficiency, allowing traffic on the main roadway to flow continuously through the intersection with a green light. This eliminates the need for stops and reduces overall delays facilitating free-flow movement.

The traffic signal or signage controls the cross street, or perpendicular roadway, which must stop at a red light. When the cross street has a green light, drivers can enter the main road by dedicated acceleration lanes. This allows them to merge safely into the free-flowing traffic.

Continuous Green T intersections offer several advantages:

  1. Improved traffic flow: Continuous green flow reduces wait times and improves traffic flow on main corridors.
  2. Increase efficiency: CGT intersections minimize congestion by removing the need for all traffic to stop, especially during peak hours.
  3. Enhance safety: The design reduces angle crashes by limiting conflicting points, making these intersections safer than conventional signalized T-intersections.

Most CGT intersections use traffic sensors that detect vehicles approaching from the cross street. When a vehicle approaches, the signal changes, allowing traffic to cross or merge into the main flow. This responsive design helps balance free-flow movement and access to the main road from the cross street.

While many Continuous Green T Intersections have traffic signals, others may function without them. In these cases, clear signage directs drivers on the cross street when to yield or stop, ensuring safe merging without the need for a traffic light.

CGT intersections are a low-cost, high-impact solution that improves safety and efficiency in busy corridors or areas with heavy commuter traffic. These intersections are increasingly popular in urban planning to improve traffic signal synchronization and streamline travel in one main direction.
