The Alabama Department of Transportation’s (ALDOT) West Central Region has seen significant progress on several key infrastructure projects over the past year. These projects delivered improved traffic flow, enhanced safety and boosted economic development across the area.
Key Accomplishments:
Tuscaloosa County
US-82 Improvements: The region’s first major Rebuild Alabama Act project in Tuscaloosa County, a 2.77-mile expansion of US-82 (McFarland Boulevard), is substantially complete. This project added travel lanes in each direction, improving access to businesses and enhancing safety for cyclists and pedestrians with a dedicated shared-use path.
US-11 Expansion: Construction continues on the major US-11 project, which will add lanes and a shared-use path to accommodate ongoing industrial development.
Resurfacing and Bridge Repairs: ALDOT completed numerous projects, including resurfacing on US-43, concrete pavement replacement in Coaling on US-11, and bridge deck rehabilitation on I-20/59.
Walker County
SR-5 Bridge Replacement: ALDOT finished the bridge replacement on SR-5 over the SR-69 underpass in Jasper ahead of schedule, improving traffic flow and safety at the intersection of SR-5 and SR-195.
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed resurfacing projects on I-22 and SR-69.
Pickens County
Gordo Bypass: Construction continues on the 6.2-mile Gordo Bypass, which will provide a quicker and safer route through West Alabama.
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed resurfacing projects on SR-17 and SR-86.
Bibb County
Bridge Replacement: The bridge replacement on SR-5 over Blue Girth Creek was substantially completed.
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed a resurfacing project on SR-25 from the Hale County line to the junction of SR-5 in Brent.
Greene County
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed a resurfacing project on US-11.
Sumter County
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed an 18-mile micro surfacing project on I-20/59 and a resurfacing project on US-80.
Chilton County
Resurfacing and Safety Improvements: ALDOT completed a resurfacing project on US-31, and an emergency slide repair was performed on SR-22.
Fiber Infrastructure: A 21-mile fiber infrastructure project along I-65 provides the Traffic Management Center (TMC) with enhanced capabilities to manage traffic flow and improve travel-time reliability.
Fayette County
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed resurfacing projects on SR-18 and SR-102.
Lamar County
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed a resurfacing project on SR-17.
Marion County
Resurfacing: An 11-mile resurfacing project on I-22 was substantially completed, and a resurfacing project on SR-129 was finished.
Winston County
Bridge Rehabilitation: ALDOT completed the bridge rehabilitation on SR-257 at Duncan Bridge over Lewis Smith Lake.
Hale County
Resurfacing: ALDOT completed a resurfacing project on SR-60 from SR-14 to SR-69.
Perry County
Turning Radius Improvement: ALDOT completed a turning radius improvement project at the intersections of CR-12 and SR-5 and CR-12 and SR-183.
These projects represent a significant investment in the West Central Region’s infrastructure, improving safety, enhancing traffic flow and supporting economic growth.
