Southeast Region: Building a stronger transportation network

The Southeast Region of the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) oversees a vast network of roadways spanning 19 counties. In fiscal year 2024, the region focused on maintaining existing infrastructure, enhancing safety and partnering with local governments to improve transportation across the region.

Key Accomplishments

  • Infrastructure Maintenance
    • Resurfaced over 564 lane miles, including significant portions of I-65 and I-85.
    • Continued bridge preservation and enhancement efforts along I-85.
    • Completed several bridge replacement projects, including a major bridge replacement on SR-14 in Dallas County.
  • Transportation Technology
    • Expanded the Regional Traffic Operations Program (RTOP) to Eufaula and Phenix City, improving signal performance and reducing travel times.
  • Local Partnerships
    • Streamlined local transportation project management to improve efficiency and enhance coordination with local governments.
  • ATRIP-II Program
    • Awarded contracts for five projects, including two roundabout projects in Pike Road and Geneva County.
  • Safety Enhancements
    • Implemented safety improvements on 15 projects, including shoulder widening, intersection modifications, and access management.
  • Emergency Response
  • Rest Area Upgrades
    • Began construction on a new I-65 South rest area in Greenville, providing travelers with a safe and modern facility.
  • Rebuild Alabama Act
    • Began construction on a significant capacity improvement project on SR-52 in Geneva County.

Looking Ahead:

While the region continues to prioritize existing infrastructure and safety, it is also preparing for future system enhancements. Design work has begun on projects to add lanes to I-85 in Montgomery and Lee counties, which will be implemented as funding becomes available.
