Prioritize Safe Driving
Super Bowl Sunday is almost here – time for touchdowns, great food and good times with friends. Whether you’re throwing a party, watching from your favorite restaurant or on the couch, don’t fumble regarding safety. Instead, plan ahead, make smart choices and never drink and drive. Ultimately, the goal is for everyone to enjoy the game while keeping Alabama’s roads safe for everyone.
Know the Stats
- In 2022, there were 986 traffic fatalities from 907 crashes.
- The proportion of fatal crashes involving impairment is 6.8x that of crashes in general.
- 197 people died in 5,005 crashes with suspected alcohol or drug impairment in 2022.
Alabama’s DUI Laws and Penalties
Driving with a blood alcohol concentration of .08% or higher is illegal in Alabama. Penalties for driving under the influence can be severe:
- First offense: Up to one year in jail, fines ranging from $600 to $2,100, a 90-day license suspension and mandatory substance abuse counseling.
- Second offense: Five days to one year in jail, fines from $1,100 to $5,100, one-year license revocation and installation of an ignition interlock device for two years.
- Third offense: 60 days to one year in jail, fines from $2,100 to $10,100, a three-year license revocation and ignition interlock installation for three years.
The Consequences of Drinking and Driving
Beyond the legal consequences, impaired driving can lead to serious outcomes. For instance, alcohol slows reaction times and impaired judgment, increasing the risk of crashes. Additionally, fines, legal fees and higher insurance premiums can add up quickly, causing significant financial strain. Perhaps most importantly, causing harm to yourself or others.
Prevent a Fumble
- Avoid impaired driving. First and foremost, for the safety of all drivers and pedestrians, never get behind the wheel of a car under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other substances that impair driving. Even one poor decision can lead to dangerous and potentially life-altering consequences.
- Plan ahead. To stay safe, arrange for a designated driver who will remain sober throughout the celebration. If that is not an option, consider using a ride-share service or taxi to get home safely.
- Put distractions away. In addition to staying sober, eliminate distractions that take your eyes, hands or mind off the road. For example, texting, TikTok, eating and adjusting your GPS are all distractions that increase your risk of a crash. Instead, place your phone on “do not disturb” and put it out of reach. By doing so, you can dramatically reduce your chances of distracted driving.
Enjoy Super Bowl LIX – safely. Remember: Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.
