Though snowfall across much of north Alabama caused few travel issues today, moisture remaining on pavements may refreeze, forming hazardous “black ice” overnight.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) advises motorists to drive slowly and cautiously.
As temperatures drop tonight, bridges are likely to experience icing first, but “black ice” concerns are not limited to bridges. Due to the very low temperatures forecasted for the region, ice is expected to form in any areas with standing water or melted snow running on pavement.
Recap of today’s activities
Though precipitation totals in some areas appeared to be higher than anticipated, coverage of most routes and bridges with pretreatment applications and relatively warm pavement temperatures helped prevent any substantial snow accumulation on highways.
ALDOT crews worked from early morning throughout the day to treat problem areas and clear slush from travel lanes of roads and bridges.
Crews on standby
Tonight, most ALDOT districts in north Alabama will either maintain a small staff or have personnel on call to respond and treat any reported icy patches.
