A major resurfacing project on I-59 in the Gadsden area will start the evening of Sunday, Feb. 23, weather permitting. ALDOT advises motorists to expect lane closures from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights.

The $7.9 million project with contractor Vulcan Materials will include milling and resurfacing of both roadways from the St. Clair County line to one mile north of the US-431/US-278 interchange in Attalla. Additionally, the project will replace concrete, install guardrail and retrofit bridge rails.

Nighttime lane closures

Lane closures will be limited to nighttime to minimize impacts to traffic. ALDOT traffic data indicates I-59 carries about 33,000 vehicles a day between SR-77 and I-759, the busiest segment within the work zone.

The project is anticipated to take about a year to complete.
