More than 100 action figures and cartoon characters line shelves and bookcases that surround Marc Kock’s desk.
From Rick and Morty to Star Wars and Scooby-Doo, the playful display is one of the first things visitors notice as they step into his office at the Traffic Management Center.
“I want my office to feel different,” said Kock, the West Central Region’s Information Technologist (IT) Support Manager. “I believe you have to enjoy where you work, and you have to enjoy what you’re walking into every day. Plus, I want people to feel comfortable when they come in and it provides an easy conversation piece.”
Kock is a self-taught IT professional whose desire for technology began at an early age. And with more than 23 years at the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), he has become a vital part of the department’s IT operations.
His fascination with computers started with a Commodore 64, the popular home computer released in 1982. That early curiosity fueled a lifelong pursuit of knowledge that laid the foundation for his future success.
“I’ve always been fascinated by computers,” Kock said. “My dad introduced me to it early on, and I quickly learned that I could teach myself pretty much anything I wanted to know.”
Before ALDOT, Kock honed his skills at Computer Customware in Montgomery and provided network administration support to various clients. His ability to troubleshoot and solve problems proved invaluable.
“Working there was crucial for my development,” Kock said. “I learned how to apply my knowledge practically as well as think on my feet.”
That adaptability serves him well, since he manages everything from telecommunications to server support, making him the go-to IT expert.
“I take pride in being the go-to person for staff at all levels,” Kock said. “It’s rewarding to know I can help keep everything running smoothly.”
Kock’s journey from a kid tinkering with a Commodore 64 to managing IT operations, it shows his willingness to learn and succeed. By creating a welcoming office and a problem-solving mindset, Kock ensures that ALDOT employees have the support they need to stay connected.
