Drivers in Orange Beach can soon expect a new traffic signal to be operational at a busy intersection in time for the school year.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), in partnership with the City of Orange Beach, anticipates activating the new traffic signal by early August 2025. It is planned for the intersection of State Route 161 (Canal Road) and Wharf Parkway East/Money Bayou Drive.
The signal is part of a larger effort to improve access, traffic flow and safety along State Route 161.

Key highlights:
- The new traffic signal aims to improve safety and access around Orange Beach Middle/High School and the Cypress Village community. It also aims to facilitate better access for businesses, including The Wharf during special events
- Helps manage school traffic from Money Bayou Drive, especially as Sweetwater Drive becomes a one-way only exit onto Canal Road
- Additional safety measures include:
- Installation of delineator posts
- Curbing improvements along Canal Road in and around the school zone to control and manage access from side streets and driveways

“We’re proud to partner with the City of Orange Beach on this important safety initiative, the first of several planned in the city,” ALDOT spokesperson James Gordon said. “These improvements will make a meaningful difference for students, families and all motorists traveling through this area.”
ALDOT encourages motorists to stay alert as crews finalize installation and prepare for the signal’s activation.
