At the request of local school and public safety officials, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is implementing new school zone speed limits on SR-59 in Loxley near Baldwin Preparatory Academy.

To improve safety for students, staff and motorists traveling through the area, the following changes will take effect soon:

  • Speed limit approaching the school zone: Reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph
  • Speed limit within the school zone: Reduced from 55 mph to 40 mph

Motorists are encouraged to stay alert and obey the new posted limits in effect during specific peak school hours:

  • Morning drop-off: 7:30 a.m. – 8:15 a.m.
  • Afternoon pick-up: 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.

“Slowing down might feel like a big deal — but through Baldwin Prep’s 1.1-mile school zone, dropping from 65 mph to 40 mph adds just 37 seconds to your drive. It could save a life and that’s time well spent,” said ALDOT Southwest Region spokesperson James Gordon.

These changes are designed to create a safer environment for everyone traveling near the school.
