For Jeff Powell, ALDOT has never just been a job, it has been a career built on hard work, teamwork and service. Powell is the District 82 Administrator, leading a small but dedicated team responsible for keeping roadways safe and maintained.
Powell began his ALDOT career in June 1984 as a construction laborer in Thomaston. He worked in the district until 1998, then moved to the Division/Area Office. In 2021, he returned to Thomaston to finish his career where it began.
“Coming back to Thomaston meant a lot to me,” Powell said. “This district has always felt like home.”
Doing more with less
District 82 currently operates with 31 employees, the smallest staff the district has ever had. Of those, only 14 are Transportation Maintenance Technicians (TMTs), which can make daily operations challenging.
Despite limited staffing, Powell says the team always finds a way to get the job done.
“They step up every time,” he said. “I wouldn’t trade this staff for anyone else’s.”
The district’s teamwork shows during emergencies. After recent storms brought high winds and downed trees, crews responded within minutes, even during early morning hours.
“We have excellent after-hours response,” Powell said. “Our people help each other, and it shows.”
Building for the future
District 82 has played a key role in the construction of the Linden Bypass, a major project that will become part of the West Alabama Highway. Additional segments of the West Alabama Highway are also in the early stages of development.
“These projects will improve travel and connectivity across West Alabama,” Powell said.
Listening matters
Powell says public service goes beyond maintaining roads. District 82 makes it a priority to return calls and listen to concerns from the public.
“Even when we can’t help, people appreciate being heard,” he said.
Proud of the people
After more than four decades with ALDOT, Powell says the most rewarding part of his job is the people.
“This district runs on teamwork,” he said. “I’m proud of the work we do and the people who do it.”
Through experience, dedication and a strong team culture, Powell says District 82 continues to serve motorists safely, one roadway at a time.
