Work will begin Monday, March 16, to improve traffic operations on Church Street, US-411 and SR-77 in Rainbow City.
The $1.1 million project with contractor Temple J Electric includes installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Church Street and SR-77 as well as upgrades to signal and detection equipment at several nearby signals.
Church Street is a shortcut between SR-77 and US-411/Rainbow Drive. Currently, left turns from Church Street to SR-77 are prohibited. Signalization of the intersection will allow for left turns from Church Street, providing some relief to the intersection of US-411 and SR-77, which sees a high volume of left turns from US-411 southbound.
Existing traffic signals at the following locations will undergo modifications or upgrades:
- US-411 and SR-77
- US-411 and Church Street
- US-411 and Market Way
- US-411 and Rainbow Plaza
- SR-77 and Independent Drive
The project will also resurface Church Street, a city street, between SR-77 and US-411.
ATRIP-II project
Project funding comes from the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II). The Rebuild Alabama Act of 2019 created ATRIP-II to advance projects of local interest on state routes.
Local sponsor Rainbow City proposed the project and provided matching funds.
Engineering consultant Sain & Associates conducted a traffic study and developed plans based on recommendations from their evaluation.
ALDOT advises motorists to expect daytime single-lane closures in the area of the project. Please reduce speed and remain alert to the potential for changes to traffic patterns and signal operations.
