New signs installed on I-65 will help motorists find their way on about about 50 miles of the interstate.

The sign replacement project with contractor Superior Traffic Control replaced 72 signs from south of the Morgan County line in Cullman County to the state line in Limestone County at a cost of about $800,000.

The project included 35 signs on I-65 in Limestone County, 37 in Morgan County and three in northern Cullman County.

Contractors installed new foundations and poles for signs, then used a crane truck to raise large sign assemblies into position.

Signs added to project

The contractor last week completed installation of the signs that were originally included in the plans. However, two more signs being added to the project will bring the total to be replaced to 74 signs.

The contractor will continue to work to remove old concrete sign foundations.

Future projects

Sign replacement projects for I-65 in Cullman County and I-565 in Limestone and Madison counties remain in planning. ALDOT anticipates letting those projects this summer.

Sign replacements target missing, damaged or deteriorating signs, as well as signs that are losing reflectivity or legibility with age or need updating to meet standards.

The greater reflectivity of new signs means better nighttime visibility, improving road safety.
