More than two weeks remain for the public to comment on ALDOT’s proposed safety improvements on US-72 East in Madison County. You can take part in public involvement online at aldotinvolved.com.

The project extends from Shields Road in Huntsville to Brock Road.

The roughly six-mile segment of highway includes 15 intersections with named city or county roads, as well as various driveways and business accesses. ALDOT proposes modifications to many of the intersections, median crossovers and other access points to improve safety.

Proposed modifications

Notable features of the project include:

  • Campbell Road – Construction of a right turn lane and closure of left-out
  • Old Gurley Road – Construction of a right turn lane and conversion to right-in/right-out only
  • Wall Road (west intersection) – Conversion to right-in only
  • Wall Cutoff Road – Construction of a left turn lane and closure of left-out
  • Parton Road – Close intersection, construct cul-de-sac, and construct connector to Jordan Road
  • Dug Hill Road – Construction of eastbound right turn lane and extension of westbound left turn lane
  • Wall Road (east intersection) – Realignment of intersection, construction of eastbound right turn lane, conversion to right-in/right-out only, and installation of multi-use path crossing the median
  • Lawler Drive – Conversion to right in/right-out only
  • Brock Road – Closure of left-out

To help motorists reach destinations without direct median crossovers, ALDOT proposes installation of several U-turn lanes and loons — paved areas outside the travel lane providing additional space for large vehicles to complete U-turns.
