Two lanes with One-Way Traffic Flow planned for Intracoastal Waterway Bridge by Memorial Day

Mar 26

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) continues making progress on construction of the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge in Baldwin County.

Motorists can expect an important milestone soon: the anticipated opening of two lanes of traffic with a one-way traffic flow across the new bridge on or before Memorial Day.

To help drivers prepare, ALDOT has released a short video explaining how the one-way traffic pattern will work and how motorists—both local residents and visitors traveling to the Gulf Coast—can easily navigate the new configuration.

Construction will continue in some areas of the new traffic pattern once it opens. Clear signage and traffic control measures will guide drivers during the transition.

Once the overall project is complete, the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge, SR-161 connector highway and the new traffic pattern will :

  • Reduce congestion on SR-59, SR-161 and SR-180
  • Improve access for emergency responders
  • Enhance hurricane evacuation capacity
  • Support continued economic growth in Coastal Alabama

ALDOT will continue sharing updates as the opening approaches and encourages motorists to watch the attached video to become familiar with the upcoming traffic flow.
