A contractor is installing the first dynamic message signs on I-65 in north Alabama this week. One DMS went into place earlier this week, and a second will be installed tonight.

The message signs are part of ALDOT’s $2.5 million advanced corridor management project on I-65. The project ranges from Exit 334 at SR-67 in Priceville to Exit 354 at US-31 in Athens.

The project aims improve traffic flow on I-65 through technology.

ALDOT North Region Traffic Systems Management and Operations Coordinator Phillip Day estimates the DMS and traffic cameras installed by the project could become active sometime this summer.

“These dynamic message signs will provide real-time travel information to assist motorists, informing them of crashes, construction delays, and alternate routes,” Day said.

The contractor, Ozark Safety Services, installed the DMS on I-65 southbound approaching Exit 347 (SR-304/Huntsville Brownsferry Road) on Tuesday, April 7, with no lane closure.

However, a lane closure will be necessary for tonight’s DMS installation on I-65 northbound, just north of the Tennessee River.

ALDOT advises drivers to expect a lane closure and possible delays from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, April 10. For real-time traffic and road condition information, visit ALGOtraffic.com or download the ALGO Traffic app.
