A contractor will tentatively begin work next week to construct additional lanes on about one mile of SR-35 in Section.
The $9.6 million project will widen the three-lane highway to five lanes — two through lanes in each direction and a center turn lane — from Williams Street to north of Scenic Drive.
The contractor, Rogers Group, will perform grading, drainage installation, and paving. The project includes construction of a wider culvert south of Section Ferry Road. It also includes installation of new signals, foundations and poles at the intersection of SR-35 and Main Street.
Subcontractors have already installed signs and erosion control for the project. Rogers Group will begin moving equipment into the work zone next week. The next step will be clearing trees and brush for the future widening.
Traffic impacts
The contractor will widen the highway in phases. ALDOT advises motorists to expect lane shifts in different sections of the work zone depending on the phase of work.
Lane closures with traffic directed by flaggers may also be implemented at times.
According to the plans, widening and culvert construction on the northbound side of SR-35 on the northern half of the project, from Ryan Street to Scenic Drive, will take place first.
The project is anticipated to take about two years.
