A safety widening and resurfacing project on US-72 East on Chapman Mountain in Huntsville will begin the evening of Sunday, July 19, weather permitting.
The 1.2-mile project from the US-72 interchange with I-565 to Moores Mill Road includes widening to expand paved shoulders, improving safety.
Work will take place from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday nights. Expect lane closures.
Grooved pavement ahead
ALDOT advises drivers to expect grooved pavement in the work zone. Due to the sequence of construction, the milled surface may remain exposed for a few weeks while shoulder work takes place. The contractor will pave travel lanes last to ensure the surface layer, an open-graded friction course (OGFC), will drain properly.
OGFC is a permeable asphalt wearing surface that allows water to drain through it, increasing friction and reducing spray and hydroplaning in wet weather.
ALDOT anticipates completion of the $942,750 project with contractor Rogers Group in late summer or early fall.
Earlier this year, the contractor completed a project to resurface about 6.5 miles of US-72 from Moores Mill Road to east of Flint River.
