Part of SR-205 in Etowah County will close for about a year during replacement of a 102-year-old bridge over the Alabama & Tennessee River Railway (ATN).

ALDOT anticipates the closure starting Monday, Aug. 3, weather permitting.

The $4.9 million project with contractor Rogers Group will also realign SR-205 and Old Guntersville Gadsden Road.

Wider, safer bridge

The existing bridge, constructed in 1924, is 92 feet long and 19 feet wide.

ALDOT plans to replace it with a longer and significantly wider structure to improve safety. The 120-foot-long bridge will be 40 feet wide, allowing for two 12-foot travel lanes with 8-foot shoulders.

Bridge subcontractor Miller & Miller will construct the new bridge.

Closure and detour

The closed work zone will extend from north of Old Guntersville Gadsden Road to just south of Waterline Road. Old Guntersville Gadsden and Waterline roads will be closed at their intersections with SR-205.

Detour signs will assist drivers. Commercial traffic must use the official detour — SR-168 in Boaz to US-431 and vice versa.
