I-565 widening moves toward next stage

Expect traffic control changes

Expect nighttime lane closures this week and next week in preparation for the next stage of work on the I-565 widening project in Madison.

Since the $29 million project began in Fall 2024, the median of I-565 from Exit 7 (County Line Road) to Bradford Creek, between Exit 8 (Glenn Hearn Boulevard) and Exit 9 (Wall Triana Highway), has remained cordoned by concrete barriers.

With the inside widening work on that part of the project substantially complete, the contractor, Wiregrass Construction, will now relocate the barriers to other areas requiring widening.

Areas still requiring widening include the outside shoulder near Exit 7 and the median near Exit 9.

Nighttime lane closures

Weather permitting, expect single-lane closures on four to five upcoming nights.

The contractor will relocate eastbound barriers on the evenings of Wednesday, Aug. 12, and Thursday, Aug. 13. They will then relocate westbound barriers on the evenings of Sunday, Aug. 16, Monday, Aug. 17, and possibly Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Work will begin about 7 p.m. each night and conclude about 6 a.m. the following day.

State troopers will assist with traffic control during this operation.

With additional lanes constructed to the inside of each roadway between Exit 7 and Bradford Creek, I-565 will now undergo widening in other areas.

Lane shift change

On the eastbound roadway, the current, rightward lane shift will change to a lane shift to the left.

A subcontractor will remove existing traffic stripe and pavement markers and install new stripe and markers delineating the new lane shift.

Drainage, guardrail and sod have been installed in the median between the widened roadways.

Bridge widening

In addition to constructing a third lane on each roadway to east of Exit 9, the project includes widening two sets of bridges, at Bradford Creek west of Exit 9 and at Intergraph Way and the Norfolk Southern railroad east of Exit 9.

Last week, bridge subcontractor Miller & Miller installed girders for the final spans of the bridges at Bradford Creek.

Due to the narrow work area between the bridges, the westernmost spans of the bridges are the last to be constructed.

Two bridges in the process of being widened. The bridge deck is in place on all but the final spans of either bridge, where girders have just been installed.
Last week, a subcontractor installed girders — long horizontal beams to support the future bridge deck — for widening the last spans of the I-565 bridges over Bradford Creek, near Exit 9.

ALDOT anticipates work on the bridges at Intergraph Way and the Norfolk Southern railroad resuming this fall, following completion of the bridges at Bradford Creek.
