The Alabama Department of Transportation announces the new traffic pattern at the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge in Gulf Shores is now fully open to motorists.
Drivers traveling through the area can now access the new one-way, free-flow traffic pattern designed to improve travel between the Beach Express, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan.
The temporary detour for southbound traffic on State Route 161 (Beach Express) has been removed, and normal traffic flow has resumed.

Motorists can now use:
- Two southbound lanes across the new ICW Bridge.
- Two northbound lanes across the former toll bridge.
- The new north roundabout and SR 161 connector roadway.
- A traffic pattern designed to help reduce delays and improve traffic flow.
“ALDOT appreciates the patience and cooperation shown by residents, visitors and local businesses throughout this project,” said James Gordon, spokesperson for ALDOT’s Southwest Region. “The goal of this project is to create a safer, smoother and more reliable route for everyone traveling to and from Alabama’s beaches.”
The project is designed to support long-term traffic needs along Alabama’s Gulf Coast while improving mobility during peak travel periods.
Key goals of the project include:
- Improving traffic flow through the area.
- Reducing congestion during busy beach travel seasons.
- Enhancing safety for motorists.
- Supporting continued growth along Alabama’s coast.
Motorists should continue using caution while traveling through the area as crews complete remaining minor work items and final cleanup activities.
ALDOT thanks the public for its patience and looks forward to providing a better travel experience for residents and visitors traveling Alabama’s coastal communities.
