The US-231/US-431 Memorial Parkway mainline and overpass at Mastin Lake Road in Huntsville fully opened to traffic this afternoon.
Governor Kay Ivey announced the opening about 4 p.m., as crews completed changes to traffic stripe to open the overpass to both directions of travel.
“For Huntsville drivers, the three-year wait for quicker travel through Memorial Parkway is finally over,” said Governor Ivey. “Today, construction workers put the final touches on the new Memorial Parkway mainline and overpass at Mastin Lake Road, paving the way for better commute times. This is another successful result of the cost-sharing partnership between ALDOT and Huntsville in addressing road projects in key corridors throughout the city.”

The overpass is the centerpiece of a $34 million project to improve traffic flow by extending the Memorial Parkway expressway. It will greatly reduce congestion at the Mastin Lake Road intersection.
“Completing the Memorial Parkway overpass at Mastin Lake Road is a major win for Huntsville’s transportation infrastructure,” Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said. “Drivers can now travel Memorial Parkway for more than 10 miles through the heart of the city with no traffic signals and no intersections, which enhances the flow of traffic and helps everyone get to their destination safely. We thank the Alabama Department of Transportation for their partnership that helped turn this project into a reality and look forward to working together on future projects.”
Transformation
Construction by contractor Rogers Group Inc. began in June 2023. The next three years brought a massive transformation of the intersection.
The project expanded US-231/US-431 to a four-lane limited access mainline with two-lane frontage roads in each direction. The overpass carries a total of six lanes over Mastin Lake Road.
The project also includes various improvements to the divided highway from north of Mastin Lake Road to Winchester Road.
Work still underway
ALDOT advises drivers to continue to use caution and reduce speed. The area remains an active work zone, with final paving ongoing.
The intersection under the overpass will stay temporarily closed to through traffic on Mastin Lake Road and all left turns. ALDOT anticipates the intersection reopening later this month with the addition of U-turn lanes.
In mid-September, the overpass opened to northbound traffic. Rogers Group then focused on paving and installation of lighting, signs and striping to prepare the southbound roadway for traffic.
Please stay alert to the possibility of temporary lane closures for paving to smoothly tie together the mainline, ramp and frontage road surfaces. Expect uneven pavement in these transition areas.
