Southwest Region winter weather updates

Jan 20

UPDATE: Friday, Jan. 24, 2:45 p.m.

Winter Storm Update

ALDOT crews continue to address isolated icy spots following Tuesday’s historic winter storm, but warmer temperatures have significantly melted most snow and ice on state and interstate roadways.

Key Points:

  • Temperatures will drop below freezing tonight for nearly 8 hours, reaching the mid-to-upper 20s.
  • Be aware: Melted snow or ice could refreeze on:
    • Shady areas of roadways
    • Elevated bridges and overpasses

Driver Tips:

  • Use extra caution if driving overnight or early Saturday morning.
  • After tonight, temperatures are expected to stay above freezing, so refreeze concerns will end for now.

Stay updated on roadway conditions by following ALGO Traffic. Drive safe!

UPDATE: Friday, Jan. 24, 9:00 a.m.

Be aware that isolated ice patches are still possible along some State and U.S. routes this morning. As temperatures warm up conditions should improve. Drive with caution.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan. 23, 5:33 p.m.

All state and interstate routes are open.

Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing again tonight. This may cause standing water and snow melt remaining on roadways and bridges to refreeze.

Dangerous, hidden “Black Ice,” conditions are possible especially at night. Drivers should use extreme caution and slow down. Go to the ALGO App to see up to the minute roadway conditions.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan. 23, 10:33 a.m.

TRAVEL ALERT – Some roads may seem safe for travel as the snow begins to melt, however, travelers need to be aware of ice in shaded areas, undetectable black ice and the likelihood that roads could ice over in many areas this evening.

UPDATE: Thursday, Jan. 23, 8:22 a.m.

Ice is present along major roadways. Hazardous driving conditions will limit your travel.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 8:08 p.m.

Motorists are advised to stay off roads as ice affects roadways throughout the region:

  • Crews setting up detour of I-165 from exit 1 to Water Street. Ramps to Exit 1 have ice but have been sanded and treated.
  • Water street ramps at West Tunnel interchange are iced over totally and impassable
  • Crews setting up detours of I-10 from Beach Express to Florida of I-10 EB and WB. US-90 to Florida is the preferred route but motorists may see some icing issues.
  • Crews setting up detour of I-65 NB and SB from Exit 19 to Exit 37
  • Crews sanding ice patches on I-10 EB from Daphne to Malbis
  • Crews closing US-31 between MP 51 and 53 and US-84 at CR-22. CR-22 is the detour.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 5:01 p.m.

ALDOT crews have been actively clearing snow and treating roadways for ice on priority routes throughout the Southwest Region. Motorists are still urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Falling temperatures increase the risk of black ice forming.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1:47 p.m.

Some roads may seem safe for travel as the snow begins to melt this afternoon. However, motorists should be aware of the likelihood that the roads could ice over this evening and in the morning hours through Thursday, Jan. 23.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 11:37 a.m.

Crews are treating ice and plowing on bridges and overpasses with steeper grades along interstates and major US routes throughout the region. There is still potential for black ice. If travel is necessary, motorists should drive for potential ice by reducing speed and driving in the visibly cleared and most traveled lane.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 6:35 a.m.

Most roads remain icy throughout South Alabama. Motorists are urged to stay off the roads if possible. If travel is unavoidable, check ALGO Traffic for updated road conditions and drive for the conditions of the road. Reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and drive in the lane that has been visibly cleared.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 6:22 p.m.

ALDOT is urging motorists to use extreme caution tomorrow morning, Jan. 22, as temperatures are expected to remain below freezing. These conditions significantly increase the potential of black ice to form on bridges and roadways.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 4:09 p.m.

Gulf Shores Police Department has closed SR-59 at the Intracoastal Waterway.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1:55 p.m.
