Travelers along I-65 near Greenville can look forward to a refreshed and more inclusive experience as ALDOT nears completion on the total rebuild of the Greenville rest area.

The outdated facility has been demolished to make way for a new, modern rest stop designed with capacity, comfort, and accessibility in mind.

One of the most notable upgrades is the expanded restroom facilities. The new site will feature two men’s restrooms, two women’s restrooms and two family restrooms, all equipped with changing tables, greatly improving service for all travelers.

“We’re increasing the type and amount of service that ALDOT can provide to the public,” Thompson Engineering Project Manager Justin Shiver said.

The rest area will also see improvements in parking capacity, including more space for passenger vehicles, trucks and buses. Other additions include new picnic pavilions, table pads as well as expanded sidewalks.

Accessibility has been a top priority.

The new facility is fully ADA compliant, featuring accessible ramps, sidewalks with compliant cross slopes, appropriately positioned countertop and switch heights and push-button automatic doors at the entrance.

With finishing touches underway, including roofing, interior fixtures, and final paving, the project, which started in May 2024, is on track for early completion by the end of the year.

The revitalized rest area promises to provide a safer, more comfortable stop for all travelers, enhancing both local traffic flow and tourism appeal.
