The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is opening the newly widened I-59 southbound lanes in Trussville just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Motorists can enjoy the improved 3.5-mile section between Chalkville Mountain Road and I-459 on starting Friday, November 21, 2025.

Originally scheduled to open by Thanksgiving, work progressed enough to expedite the opening by nearly a week.

To accommodate the third interstate lane, the project also required the decking replacement on the bridge over Edwards Lake Road.

Contractor Wiregrass Construction Co. met the eight-month construction deadline on the southbound portion of the project to receive a $1 million incentive.

They also completed the southbound ramps at Exit 141 (Chalkville Mountain Rd.) within the 40-day incentive window earlier this fall.

Wiregrass Construction beat the 40-day deadline to reconstruct the southbound ramps at Exit 141.

Following Friday’s opening of the newly built southbound lanes, work will transition to the northbound side.

Once the contractor shifts traffic in December, they will have eight months to finish that section of the job to receive an additional $1 million incentive.

The entire $70,377,212.87 project is scheduled for completion by Spring 2027.

ALDOT thanks community stakeholders and the public for their help and ongoing patience during the first half of this highly impactful interstate improvement.
