As daylight saving time approaches, it’s a great opportunity to spring into safer driving habits. While losing an hour of sleep has its challenges, getting behind the wheel of a car when you’re drowsy is dangerous and preventable.

According to the latest data from the Crash Facts publication, drowsy driving was a factor in 2,336 crashes and 17 fatalities on Alabama roadways in 2022. These numbers serve as a reminder of the importance of getting enough rest, especially during the time change.

Crash Facts is a resource created by ALDOT that motorists can use to identify ways to stay safe on the road. Through its Drive Safe Alabama public information campaign, ALDOT is working to create a culture where drivers put safety first.

Here are a few tips to ensure you’re well rested and ready to drive:

  • Avoid Distractions: Keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions like texting, talking on the phone or changing the radio.
  • Limit Caffeine and Electronics: Avoid caffeine and screen time in the hours before bed. They can interfere with your ability to fall asleep. If you do have your phone in bed, visit www.DriveSafeAlabama.org for information about safe driving!
  • Observe Speed Limits: Speeding reduces your ability to react to unexpected situations. Follow posted speed limits and adjust your speed based on road conditions and in work zones.
  • Take Short Breaks: If you’re feeling drowsy while driving, pull over in a safe location and take a stretch break to recharge.

By taking a few simple steps, you can ensure a smooth ride into daylight saving time and longer, sunnier days. A well-rested driver is a safe driver, and Alabama only has room for safe drivers on its roads!
