The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has reopened SR-63 to traffic at US-280 following a bridge replacement project in Alexander City.
Closed since May 2025, the upgraded corridor offers a new bottomless arch bridge culvert over Sugar Creek. It is 120 feet long, 36 feet wide and 17 feet tall.
The roadway handles nearly 6,000 vehicles a day. It serves as a primary route from US-280 in Alexander City to Lake Martin and nearby Wind Creek State Park.
The new culvert replaces the original SR-63 bridge built in 1931.
While the road is now open to traffic, there is still work for the contractor to complete before the project is finalized. These items include some drainage work, permanent striping/raised pavement markers, completion of driveways, and general project-site clean-up.
ALDOT would like to thank the public for their patience during this important SR-63 bridge upgrade.
In addition, crews have started a nearby resurfacing and access management project on US-280 between SR-63 and Dadeville Road. The work should continue through Spring 2027.
